The Social Security Agency has given the IRS information that will help nearly 30 million people receive their $ 1,400 worth of stimulus checks, lawmakers said Thursday.
The development comes after the Democratic leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee have given the agency 24 hours to hand over the payment information for the IRS to process the payments.
In a statement, lawmakers, led by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., Blamed Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul for delays “contrary to the intentions of Congress and causing unnecessary anxiety and pain for taxpayers.” imposed “.
In response, Saul released a statement Thursday that strongly denied these allegations.
Saul said the Social Security Agency had limited ability to begin with, depending on how its role is set out in Social Security Act and the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act.
“Once we were free to move forward, we worked aggressively with Treasury and the IRS to make payments,” Saul said.
The Social Security Agency announced that it worked with the IRS on March 17 to obtain these files.
As of 8:48 a.m. this morning, the required files were submitted to the IRS so that the payments could be routed to the beneficiaries.
The information submitted to the tax authority this morning was more than a week earlier than similar files for the first economic impact payments, according to Saul.
The updates to the Social Security Administration help ensure payments are delivered to the correct bank accounts and addresses. The agency also deleted people who have since passed away.
“Social security staff have worked literally day and night with IRS staff to ensure that Social Security recipients and SSI electronic files are complete, accurate, and ready to issue payments,” Saul said.

Democratic lawmakers called for pending checks for $ 1,400 to be mailed immediately.
“Now the IRS must do its job and forward these overdue payments to suffering Americans,” said the leaders. “This committee will not tolerate any further delays.”
In addition to Neal, there were also Reps John Larson, D-Conn .; Bill Pascrell Jr., DN.J .; and Danny K. Davis, D-Ill.
These four leaders also sent a letter to the IRS and Social Security earlier this week calling for immediate action to get the necessary payments to all federal beneficiaries. In addition to Social Security, this includes those who receive checks from Supplemental Security Income, Veterans Affairs, and the Railroad Retirement Board.
The news comes when the Treasury Department, IRS, and Bureau of the Fiscal Service announced on Wednesday that a total of 127 million third stimulus checks, valued at $ 325 billion, have been completed to date.
Some federal recipients whose information is already in their 2019 or 2020 tax returns or by completing the IRS non-filer tool last year were included in these initial payments.
The IRS is working with other federal agencies to get updated information so that beneficiaries can get their $ 1,400 checks quickly and automatically, the agencies said.
