(Reuters) – When Melinda French Gates asked her husband, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ 🙂 Co-founder Bill Gates, for her to co-author the 2013 annual letter about her founding, the conversation turned into a battle.

“It got hot,” wrote Melinda in her 2019 book, The Moment of Lift. “Bill said the process we had for the annual letter worked well for the foundation for years and he didn’t see why it should change.”

Ultimately, Bill agreed that she should write a separate piece on contraception while he wrote the main letter on the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In the next year’s letter, Melinda wrote of one of three myths “blocking progress for the poor” while Bill covered the other two.

In 2015 both signed the letter.

“He had to learn how to be the same, and I had to learn how to level up and be the same,” wrote Melinda, adding earlier in the book that she was inherently “shy” and “private”.

Melinda’s long journey away from Bill’s shadow will enter a new phase after the billionaire’s benefactors announced on Monday they were getting divorced after 27 years and said in a court case that “this marriage is irrevocably broken”.

The 56-year-old computer scientist from Texas, who met 65-year-old Bill Gates at a company dinner in New York, will continue to lead the foundation with him. But she has also positioned herself as a solo activist for women’s rights.

In 2015, she founded Pivotal Ventures, an investment firm focused on women and families, while her book focuses on issues of empowering women.

“The world is finally awakening to the fact that none of us can move forward with half of us held back. The data is clear: empowered women are transforming societies,” she wrote in a note about her book.

Her Facebook (NASDAQ 🙂 page contains greetings for carers and concerned posts about caring for newborns, as well as an Easter post with an old photo of her smile as she holds a little girl, presumably one of her two daughters, next to a costumed Easter bunny.

The extent of Melinda’s impact will likely depend in part on what happens to Bill Gates’ fortune, which Forbes valued at around $ 130.5 billion. At the time of the divorce, the spouses stated that they had agreed on the division of the property, but did not disclose any details.

MacKenzie Scott’s 2019 divorce from Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ 🙂 founder Jeff Bezos left a 4% stake in Amazon that has made her a leading philanthropist. In December, Scott said she had donated over $ 4.1 billion to food banks and emergency funds in the past four months as part of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tech journalist Kara Swisher tweeted that she saw “a lot of funny” memes about MacKenzie Scott and Melinda Gates, but for your information, Melinda has invested a lot through her Pivotal Ventures and has been a key player in the Gates Foundation with Bill for a long time Time so not sure if much will change. “
