Seattle Kraken officially becomes the 32nd team in the NHL

The Seattle Kraken officially became the 32nd team in the NHL on Friday.

“I am delighted to officially welcome the Seattle Kraken as our 32nd member club to the NHL on behalf of the Board of Governors,” said Commissioner Gary Bettman in a press release. “Congratulations to David Bonderman, the Bonderman family, their partners, the entire Seattle Kraken organization, the city of Seattle and all of the Kraken fans as the club continues its exciting journey towards Puck Drop in October.”

The Kraken will compete in the Pacific Conference of the Western Conference starting next season.

“Today is another significant day on the way to the puck drop,” said majority owner David Bonderman. “I would like to thank Gary Bettman and the NHL for welcoming us to the league. I also want to thank my partners in our Ownership Group for their support and our incredible fans who have heard their enthusiasm for hockey clearly since deposit day got on March 1, 2018 by unveiling the name and selecting their seats.

“We have incredible months ahead of us as we prepare to welcome our first players and finally hit the ice at the Climate Pledge Arena.”

Ron Francis is the general manager and the team has not yet named a head coach.

The 2021 NHL draft expansion is scheduled for July 21. At that point, Seattle will select one player from 30 of the league’s 31 teams. The Vegas Golden Knights, the youngest team to join the league in 2017/18, are exempt from the Kraken draft.
