BARCELONA (Reuters) – Spanish pharmaceutical company Reig Jofre announced on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with Johnson & Johnson (NYSE 🙂 to manufacture the US company’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine at its Barcelona facility.
J & J’s Janssen subsidiary will transfer the technology needed to mass-produce the vaccine candidate to Reig Jofre so that production can begin once the shot receives regulatory approval, the Spanish company said in a statement.
Under the terms of the agreement, Reig Jofre will be responsible for the formulation, filling and packaging of the vaccine while Janssen will be responsible for distribution.
The shares of the Spanish group rose 17% in early trading to 4.41 euros per share.
Reig Jofre said last month that its new factory could produce 50 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine a year without canceling existing contracts.
The company’s new plant in Barcelona is under construction and is expected to start operations in the first quarter of 2021.
Ignasi Biosca, CEO of Reig Jofre, told Reuters in July the company should have the capacity to produce between one million and two million vaccine doses a day over the next year.
Biosca said it could invest an additional 2-3 million euros to adapt its new facility for the final step in the production process of filling the COVID-19 vaccine into vials or syringes, for example to ensure the low temperature required to preserve the Vaccine is required.
